setting up remote desktop for the internet
If you have Windows XP Professional™ and are not using its
Remote Desktop functionality, you're missing out on one of its best
features. I've used Remote Desktop for years (since NT4 Terminal Server
edition) and each generation has shown remarkable improvements in both
performance and functionality. Windows XP Professional™ is no
exception. With 24-bit color and passthrough audio it's as if you're
sitting in front of the machine. Home Edition users can get a taste of
remote desktop with Remote Assistance. Remote Desktop is also
included in Windows XP Media Center 2005 edition.
A word of caution: Remote Desktop truly is a "professional"
feature. Exposing this kind of functionality over the Internet poses
serious risks. You should never enable remote desktop when you have
easily guessable usernames or passwords. I'd recommend only turning it on
while on vacation, or away on business to limit your exposure.
